Currently responsible within AiA for delivery of policy for input to the regeneration of the Granton area of the Edinburgh Waterfront.

 

Algeria 1984 – assistant architect consultant with Knight & Marsden Architects to Halcrow Fox for the design and delivery of new housing to replace the squatter town in Algiers. Specific proposals for indigenous Islamic courtyard housing.

 

London 1985-1987 – part-time assistant architect with Lazenby & Smith. Project designer and community on-site contact Martlett Court W1 the 1st RIBA Community Architecture project. Assistant on several housing association proposals for affordable social housing. Several competition entries.

 

London 1987-1990 – assistant architect with Hazel McCormack Young. Major role in Greenwich Peninsular competition providing the social housing. In collaboration with Foster Associates the design of 3,500 residential units including 750 social housing units for Camden Council. Design and delivery of approximately 250 self-build houses/flats for Rosehaugh Self-build throughout England.

 

London 1990-1997 – Established M&J Architects with teaching partner Architect Derek James. Several project proposals for major developer led housing projects in London Docklands with David Price of Price and Cullen. Several competition entries for large urban regeneration projects, a mention in the Orestad competition in Copenhagen.

 

Bishop Stortford Herts 1997-2001 Design Associates working as sole practitioner mainly on small domestic conversions and extensions whilst teaching at the Kent Institute of Art & Design.

 

Teaching experience ranges form studio tutor at UEL University of East London to finally being Course leader in Interior Design at Arts Institute at Bournemouth. Finally setting up the current RIBA recognized Part 1 Architecture course at the Arts Institute at  Bournemouth.

 

St Laurent France 2001-2003 establishing small art gallery in village shop specializing in modern painting and small sculpture.

 

Edinburgh 2003-2006 collaborating with AiA Art in Architecture on small public art sculpture projects.

 

Edinburgh 2006-present Partner with Shaeron Averbuch in AiA Art in Architecture LLP established a traveling exhibition of the RIBA Student Presidents Medals, this ran for 3 years and traveled throughout the UK and internationally to Australia and Singapore. Mainly involved in major urban regeneration ideas proposals finally concentrating on the waterfront of Edinburgh.

 

Co-established with Shaeron Averbuch the community group JUMP Joined Up Master Planning to produce Contra Plans for communities confronted with major developer led development on their doorstep. Major proposals so far include the contra plan for Leith docks and The Flower Colony at Slateford Road both in Edinburgh.

 

The JUMP group and AiA office ethos puts community at its heart and aims to provide communities with the means to control their local environment.
